Digital Basics Series (Parts 1–3)

Program Overview

The Digital Basics Series is a three-part, hands-on workshop series designed to help adults build confidence using computers, phones, and everyday technology.

This series is ideal for beginners, older adults, and anyone who wants to better understand the digital tools they use every day. Each session focuses on practical skills, real-world examples, and guided practice in a supportive, judgment-free environment.

Participants may attend one session or the full series. Each class builds on the previous one but can also be taken independently.

What You'll Learn

Across the series, participants will learn how to:

  • Use a computer and mouse with confidence
  • Open, save, and manage files
  • Understand user accounts and online accounts
  • Create and manage strong passwords
  • Install safe and useful programs
  • Back up important information on computers and phones
  • Understand basic digital safety and protection

Who This Series Is For

  • Beginners with little or no computer experience
  • Older adults looking to refresh or build digital skills
  • Community members who want practical, everyday tech knowledge
  • Anyone feeling overwhelmed by computers or smartphones

No prior experience required.

What to Bring

  • Your own device (laptop, Chromebook, or Android phone preferred)
  • Charging cable for your device

A limited number of devices may be available if needed.

Sessions in This Series

Part 1: Getting Started

Learn the fundamentals of using a computer. This session covers powering on devices, mouse and keyboard basics, opening programs, and simple hands-on practice to build confidence from the ground up.

Part 1: Getting Started

Focus: Building fundamental computer skills and confidence

You'll learn how to:

  • Turn on and shut down a computer properly
  • Use a mouse and keyboard effectively
  • Understand the desktop and basic navigation
  • Open and close programs
  • Connect to Wi-Fi safely
  • Open a web browser and visit websites
  • Create and use an email account

Part 2: Making It Yours

Focus: Personalizing and organizing your digital tools

You'll learn how to:

  • Change desktop backgrounds and settings
  • Create, name, and organize folders
  • Save and find files and documents
  • Install and uninstall safe programs
  • Use cloud storage basics (Google Drive, Dropbox)
  • Take and organize photos on your phone
  • Download and use helpful apps

Part 3: Protecting Your Digital Life

Focus: Safety, security, and privacy protection

You'll learn how to:

  • Create strong, memorable passwords
  • Recognize and avoid online scams
  • Set up two-factor authentication
  • Adjust privacy settings on social media
  • Back up important files and photos
  • Update software for security
  • Use antivirus and protection tools
